Cummins Westport Heavy-Duty Alternative Fuel Engines
Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) offers heavy-duty natural gas vehicle engines for the automotive market, for applications such as
truck and bus. With over 25,000 engines in service worldwide, CWI engines are designed to meet the most stringent
emissions regulations and provide efficient and reliable service. Certified with
catalyst, they meet or exceed the toughest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), California Air Resources Board (CARB),
and EURO emissions standards.
Why Natural Gas?
Natural gas, or methane, is one of the cleanest, safest, and most useful forms of energy. It has
a simple chemical make-up:
one molecule of carbon and four molecules of hydrogen (CH4). With the highest hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of any
hydrocarbon, it burns very cleanly, producing less greenhouse gases and particulate matter (i.e. soot). Natural gas is a
plentiful resource in North America and worldwide. And with biomethane being produced from
landfill gas and food wastes, an abundant supply of clean, renewable energy is available.
Why Cummins Westport?
Starting in 1991 with the production of its first natural gas heavy-duty engine, Cummins has continued to develop clean,
leading-edge natural gas engine technology, introducing its engines into the market in advance of regulated emissions standards.
Cummins Westport was formed in 2001 as a 50:50 joint venture between Cummins Inc.
and Westport Innovations Inc. It has 50 employees, located around the globe.
Engineering and customer support staff are located in Columbus, IN. Sales, marketing and management staff are based in the USA, Canada,
UK, and Beijing.
Products
Cummins Westport engines range from 5.9 to 8.9 liters with 150 hp [112 kW] to 320 hp [239 kW]. In North America, we offer the
ISL G. Outside of North America, the C Gas Plus,
B Gas Plus*,
and B Gas International are also available. Our engines are designed to operate on
compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid natural gas (LNG), and
biomethane which meet Cummins published fuel
specifications. CWI's natural gas engines are put to work in a variety of applications such as refuse, vocational and
dump trucks, medium and heavy-duty truck and tractor applications, urban transit, shuttle, school bus, street-sweepers, and
delivery vehicles.
CWI engines are dedicated natural gas engines—not conversions. Based on Cummins' proven and reliable diesel platforms, CWI's
products are built in the same plants that manufacture Cummins diesel engines. Warranty, service, and aftermarket support are
provided by the Global Cummins Distributor and Dealer network.
* The BLPG Plus propane engine is also available for Mexican and Latin American markets.
Incentives
Governments around the globe are recognizing the benefits of choosing cleaner technologies for transportation. To help customers
and businesses, there are programs in place that provide incentives and financial assistance
to those interested in switching to alternative fuels. Funding for natural gas use, fueling infrastructure, and vehicle
technologies is increasing opportunities to benefit from using alternative fuels. To find out about incentives available in your
area, contact your local natural gas vehicle organization or government energy office.
More and more businesses are seeing the value of low emission, high performing natural gas engines—for the environment and
for their bottom line.
CWI engines are powering vehicles around the world in countries such as the United States, China, India, France, Turkey, and
Australia, offering:
- Clean, quiet, and reliable performance
- Lower greenhouse gas emissions with natural gas (and biomethane)
- Improved efficiency and lower total fuel costs
- Less reliance on imported oil
- Parts, warranty, and support offered through the Cummins worldwide distributor and service dealer network.
